Parallel Threads October 23 - November 22, 2010
Reception: Thursday, October 28, 6-8pm

School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents Parallel Threads, an exhibition of prints, digital video, computer animation and interactive installations by students, alumni and faculty from the MFA Computer Art Department. The exhibition is curated by Diane Field and Charley Lewis.

The exhibiting students are Beyza Boyacioglu, Jonathan Brainin, Hwayong Jung, Hyelim Kim, Hyung Gyu Kim and Song Yup Kim. They work in various media, including 3D animation and interactive installations.

Exhibiting alumni include Jose Carlos Casado (MFA 2001 Computer Art), John Cinco (MFA 1998 Computer Art) and Dustin Grella (MFA 2009 Computer Art). Grella develops artifacts and events that explore the human experience through the passage of time. His work focuses on the design and creation of systems that gather the thoughts or feelings of individuals at particular moments. Using animation, installation, and even the postal service, Grella brings sincerity and absurdity, structure and improvisation to seemingly mundane tasks.

Faculty members Andy Deck, Eric Eiser, Jarryd Lowder and Joseph Nechvatal are also represented in the exhibition. Lowder works with electronic audiovisual media, integrating forms such as video, sound and music primarily for live performance. His performances and other works have been presented in the U.S. and abroad, including Spain, France, Japan, Finland, Korea and the Netherlands.

The MFA Computer Art Department emphasizes creative experimentation and a multidisciplinary approach to making art with computers and emerging technologies. Dedicated to producing digital artists of the highest caliber, the department guides each student in the development of a personal artistic style in a course of study that is individually tailored to meet his or her needs. Students come from around the world to study in this two-year, 60-credit MFA degree program, which has distinguished itself with multiple Student Academy Awards.
